The Volcano is so majestic that living close to it means being surrounded by nature, and often having a simple view from afar is not so special. However, it is important to note that Volcán Barú is an active mountain and can present potential hazards to people living near it. Therefore, it is important to be informed and prepared in case of an eruption or any other emergency. Its last eruption in the year 1550 was documented by Spanish navigators travelling through the Panamanian Pacific. For a volcano to be considered inactive, it must have been without activity for more than 10,000 years. More than 500 years have passed since the last eruption of the Barú Volcano and the concern has been almost nil, so there is a high probability that everything will be fine for the next hundreds of years…
As we already mentioned, Boquete is one of the closest towns, but if you really want to live near the slopes or the beginning of this great mountain, you will have other options such as the town of Volcán and even Cerro Punta.
