What is Ectothermy?

The term “ectothermy” refers to one of the main characteristics of reptiles and amphibians: regulating their body temperature through the environment. These animals, also known as ectotherms, rely on external heat to maintain their proper body temperature.

What is a Herpetarium?

A herpetarium is a place dedicated to the conservation and study of reptiles and amphibians. At Ectotermia Herpetario, you can closely observe these fascinating creatures, learn about their habits and characteristics, and discover the importance of their preservation.

Location and Hours

Ectotermia Herpetario is located in Mata del Francés, on the way up to Boquete, about 10 minutes from Bajo Boquete. The center is open from Wednesday to Sunday until 4 p.m. Tours are by appointment only, so be sure to schedule your visit in advance.

History and Foundation

This wonderful place is an initiative of Dr. Abel Batista and his wife. Their goal is to educate the public about the biodiversity of Panama’s reptiles and amphibians, promote their conservation, and encourage respect for these animals.

The Experience at Ectotermia Herpetario

Welcome and Tour Start

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by expert guides, such as Licenciada Chelina, who will take you on an educational and exciting tour. You will learn about the evolution of reptiles and amphibians, from the first animals that left the water to those that inhabit the Earth today.

The Diversity of Panama

Panama is a privileged country in terms of biodiversity. Thanks to its geographic position as a bridge between North and South America, it is home to various reptiles and amphibians. You will learn about species such as the salamander and the spiny lizard from the north, as well as the strawberry poison-dart frogs and snail-eating snakes from the south.

Groups of Amphibians and Reptiles

Amphibians

  • Anura: Includes toads and frogs.
  • Caudata: Salamanders.
  • Caecilians: Underground animals, similar to worms but with unique amphibian characteristics.

Reptiles

  • Lizards: Includes geckos, iguanas, and chameleons.
  • Snakes: Both venomous and non-venomous.
  • Turtles: Terrestrial, semi-aquatic, and marine.
  • Crocodiles: In Panama, you will find American crocodiles and spectacled caimans.

Tools of a Herpetologist

During the tour, you will learn about herpetologists’ tools in the field, such as hooks, tongs, and cameras. These tools are essential for studying and recording reptiles and amphibians in their natural habitats.

Terrariums and Featured Species

At Ectotermia Herpetario, various terrariums are housing different species. You will see green and black poison-dart frogs, Capito lizards, and dendrobates auratus, among others. You will learn about their diets and how some species lose their venom in captivity due to a controlled diet.

The Yurt and Its Functionality

The structures of the terrariums, known as yurts, are Mongolian-origin houses that provide a suitable habitat for the animals, keeping them cool and with enough sunlight.
