Boquete, Panama Is the #1 Place to Retire in 2026. Here’s What That Really Means

Those of us who live and work in Chiriquí already knew it. Now an international ranking agrees: Boquete took first place out of 12 destinations worldwide in the 2026 Overseas Retirement Index by Live and Invest Overseas, ahead of Portugal, Mexico, France, Italy and Spain.

At Prestige Panama Realty we’ve helped North Americans and locals buy, rent and sell in David and Boquete since 2008. Here’s what the index says, and what we see on the ground.

What is the 2026 Overseas Retirement Index?

Live and Invest Overseas has published its retirement index for 18 years, aimed at North Americans considering a move abroad. Each destination gets a letter grade from A+ to F across criteria including cost of living, real estate, health care, residency, taxes, safety, infrastructure, expat community, English spoken and investment potential.

In 2026, Boquete earned the top overall grade.

Why Boquete won

  • Spring weather all year. Typically 65–75°F at about 3,900 feet. No beach heat, no winters, and Panama sits outside the hurricane belt.
  • A large English-speaking expat community. Roughly one in four residents of Bajo Boquete is an expat. You can get by in English for almost everything.
  • Safety. A quiet small town where violent crime is rare.
  • Pensionado. Panama’s retiree program offers discounts of up to 50% on many services.
  • Nature and coffee. Volcán Barú, cloud-forest trails, waterfalls, Caldera hot springs, and Geisha coffee that has sold for over $13,700 a pound at auction.

What does it cost to live in Boquete?

Destination Estimated monthly budget
Boquete, Panama (#1) $2,400
The Algarve, Portugal (#2) $3,085
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (#3) $3,305

The same publication’s Boquete guide puts a couple’s budget at around $2,500 a month including rent. A private doctor’s visit runs $25–50, and a meal at a local restaurant $5–15.

Buying or renting

Per the source, furnished one-bedroom rentals start around $800 a month, a modest two-bedroom home costs about $150,000, and homes in gated communities start around $350,000. For investors, well-located two-bedroom condos rent for $1,200–1,600 a month on long-term leases.

Our experience: prices vary a lot by area, altitude and road access. We always recommend seeing several areas before you decide.

The honest downsides

We’d rather tell you first:

  • The rainy season is long. May to November brings afternoon rain most days, though mornings are usually clear.
  • You’ll want a car unless you live in central Bajo Boquete.
  • Specialists and hospitals are in David, about 45 minutes away. Boquete has private clinics for everyday care.
  • Boquete costs more than the rest of Panama because expat demand is high.

None of this is a deal-breaker if you know it upfront. It’s why we work both sides: David and Boquete.

Where to live in Boquete

  • Bajo Boquete: the town center. Walkable, restaurants, markets, social life.
  • Alto Boquete: closer to David, a bit warmer, supermarkets nearby.
  • Jaramillo and Volcancito: higher up, cooler, valley views.
  • Los Molinos and Palmira: quieter, slightly warmer, a few minutes from town.
  • Caldera: lower and warmer, near the hot springs.
